EDIT: According to my research it’s actually a 1967 built in England for export. =D

Oh man I would have to do an Isuzu diesel swap. I really want a first Gen range rover 2 door with an Isuzu.

Have you considered a VW TDI swap? Cheaper than a 4BT, sturdy, and nice and compact. Packaging would be a snap compared to a 4BT. They react well to more turbo, too. I’ve been seeing more and more in Jeeps lately. That and Kubota V2203 swaps.

Neat-o! Looks like a fun project. What’s the plan? Full restoration, resto-mod, fix it up just good-enough, or maybe you’ll make an offroad monster?

Resto mod that looks as stock as possible, I want it to be more of an Overlander than a off road monster. Upgrade axles, brakes and suspension ect...

Only real minus is that the roof needs a bit of repair, but isn’t terrible.
Almost zero rust on the car as it was stored in a barn in Colorado for 20 years and even though the engine is in pieces it comes with a new crank shaft, cam shaft and piston rings.
It has the wheel mount on the hood (it’s those 4 bolts sticking out of the hood in the third picture) and it comes with 6 wheels.

I was also kicking that around. I know you can convert the 1.9 to a mechanical fuel injection pump and remove all the electronics.

That’s one approach, there are also a fair number of people getting older electronic TDIs working well. I think the ALH was the one to have for a swap? Way outside my area of expertise here! Either way, that Land Rover will be awesome no matter what engine it gets. Great find!

It’s a good choice! It’s got personality! Haha.
So, now you have 2 projects. Working on it and posting up progress reports!
4BT would sure be nice to have. Either way, a nice diesel in that truck will be fantastic. Also, what’s the story on the woodie?

I’m going back and forth on the engine, on the one hand the engine that is coming with it is a 3 main bearing 2.25 diesel that has all new crank shaft, cam shaft and piston rings. When I put that together it will pretty much be a whole new engine as the block is in excellent condition. Granted the engine is a slug but if I put 3.57 gearing in the diffs I could comfortably cruise at 65mph (do it in my Dad’s 88" and it has the 2.25 gas 4 banger). On the other though, if I find myself a 4BT or 300Tdi to put in it would make the truck much more every day drivable.
It’s a Model T that the guy built for his wife, custom wood body he had built for it. The guy was a Model T guy for a hobby and thought the Landie would be a great project, ended up being to much for him so he sold it to me (he’s 81 years old).
I intend to document the whole restore, I think I’m going to try keep it as stock looking as possible but upgrade the axles, brakes and possibly engine. Also don’t know if I want to keep the Limestone colour. Doesn’t quite POP as the other colours it came in:
Kinda leaning towards the Heritage green...

Nice, depends on what you decide this truck is to you. Daily or at least “often” driver then the bigger engines would be nice. If it’s going to be more of a classic car then the NA would be fine I bet. Always a tough choice!!
That Model T is a trip. Love it.
I know of some 2.5NA’s available if that’s an option. The guys who are selling the 110 Tithonous are pulling the engines from the ones they are keeping to put in TDI’s for a big trip their doing. That leaves 3 engines that I don’t know if they have buyers for. Then again, shipping might cost as much as an engine.

Yeah, it is tough choice. I honestly right now want to make this my DD/camping truck. Jersey summers are hot, but nothing nearly as bad as Durban was so I might get a little sweaty on my way home from work in the evenings but meh. This might change, and who knows I might get myself a 300Tdi with the AC compressor and retro fit it to the current heating system. I know for sure I’m getting an upgraded heating system, that leg burner isn’t going to cut it.

Well as a GM dealer in CA I can tell you Duarmax parts are not hard to find. But you are right. A manufactured 6.6 Turbo is just over $6,800 and the $3,500 core charge makes it just over $10k. Add tax and you are looking at $11k, but I’m sure you could get one out of a wrecking yard much cheaper.

Where as I could import a 300 Tdi from England for £480 + shipping which is well under $6,800. 4BT would be great as well, but also pretty pricey.

Yeah, I suppose so. I just really want to put a 6.6T into something ridiculous. And an old Land Rover would just be perfect. No one would expect such a monster under the hood.

Your biggest problem with a 300TDi or any other large inline or V engine..larger than stock anyway...is that you’ll need to make the engine bay longer.
This simply means moving the grille forward to a point inline with the lights...exactly the same as Defenders. At which point it won’t be a Series anymore.
The ‘other’ big issue is that bigger engines and more speed in a Series Landie are not great for the braking system...and the weight over the nose is not a hoot for handling either.
I know the problem with speed as I had a Series 3 Stage 1 which came with the V8 out of the Range Rover. Once the factory restrictions came out of the engine (included because engine performance could exceed chassis/brakes/steering capacity) it became ‘quite a handful’.
If you are going to re-engine it then I’d go for the alloy Buick derived V8 from a Classic/P38/Disco 1&2 with a disc brake conversion, PAS conversion and parabolic springs. The 300Tdi is a good engine but not a great one...and it weighs a sodding tonne.
My preference would be to accept that you now own and will drive a 50 year old agricultural vehicle and therefore get the stock engine sorted and ensure that the driveline and suspension are the best that they can be.
I can promise you that driving this thing at 65 mph is borderline insanity. In a S2...65 mph will suck the door tops out of their frames...and make the roof and windscreen shake. And stopping will be a leisurely experience.
My Stage 1 could manage 100 mph but this involved a cacophony of noise, heat and vibration and was accompanied by the sensation of being trapped in a fast moving letterbox. It was hilarious fun but completely stupid

My father and I have been able to fit a 300 Tdi to his 109 IIa (it requires a bit of creative arrangement of pipe work and intercoolers, stumpy bell housing for the R380 gear box and a 6 cylinder bulk head) but we’ve been able to keep the grill in it’s proper location. No photos showing it as the chassis is currently prepped for galvy so this is the best I’ve got .
At this point the 109 had a 3.0L Ford V6 (at this point it still had the 4 cylinder bulk head but my dad made the engine fit)
You’d be very surprised how well mannered a Series is on the highway when you have Disco Axles and parabolic springs underneath it with disk brakes all round. Damn thing stops better then my D2.
I can tell you that I’ve had this bad boy up to 70 mph and survived intact, Landie as well... at least I didn’t see or hear anything fly off, but then again I’m pretty sure a bomb could of detonated next to me and I’d not have heard it over the noise.
Nothing is really set in stone at this point, this weekend when I can really climb into her and see what is salvageable and what isn’t.
Ultimately I’d like to get her to something resembling this particular IIa.

Your right, it doesn’t but I just don’t like Limestone as I’ve been looking at a Limestone Series IIa for the past 27 years and these trucks look so damn good in Pastel Green.
I do however intend to keep it long enough for it to develop another patina, granted I might help accelerate the patina look because this isn’t going to be some garage queen you drive on Sundays to the local car show. This is going to be a driven often and everywhere Land Rover as nature intended.
To paraphrase Bane:
Most people merely adopt the Land Rover life, I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t realize that all cars didn’t leak until I was almost a man...

Soooo excited, congrats!
If you need series parts you just need to know where to look. The president of the Pacific Coast Rover Club (PCRC) owns a shop that specializes in rovers and has quite a selection of parts. Google street view and satellites show just how much stuff he actually has.
